What do you do when Big Papi lunges at you with the intention to lick you? If you’re Mets Legend and one of the greatest cameos in Seinfeld history, which is really saying something, you make it 100% clear that you’re NOT from San Francisco even when you’re from San Francisco
Not a great way to start a game 7 of a World Series. Just a poor choice of words. Hernandez has already come out and apologized for what he said.
“I made a poor attempt at humor and never intended for it to be taken the wrong way,” Hernandez said in a statement sent to The News. “I am from San Francisco and as baseball fans know, the Dodgers/Giants rivalry runs deep. I did not grow up a Dodger fan and when it came down to Giants vs. Dodgers, I rooted for the Giants. I apologize if any offense was taken.”
I can’t say I definitively know if Keith Hernandez has a problem with gay people or not. He’s a celebrity and I like to live a life where I don’t know anything about these people because I don’t know anything about these people. I will say that this isn’t the first time Hernandez something stupid that got him in trouble
On April 22, 2006, Hernandez created a controversy during the broadcast of a game against the San Diego Padres. After witnessing Padres team massage therapist Kelly Calabrese giving San Diego catcher Mike Piazza a high five in the dugout after he hit a home run, Hernandez said, “Who is the girl in the dugout, with the long hair? What’s going on here? You have got to be kidding me. Only player personnel in the dugout.” After Hernandez was informed later in the broadcast that Calabrese was a club employee, he maintained his position, stating, “I won’t say that women belong in the kitchen, but they don’t belong in the dugout.” After the game, San Diego manager Bruce Bochy expressed displeasure with Hernandez’s comments. Hernandez apologized and alluded to his words being nothing more than tomfoolery by saying, “You know I am only teasing. I love you gals out there — always have.”
Seems like Keith is just one of those guys that doesn’t realize that words matter to plenty of people kind of like a certain individual who’s the president of America. Does he truly mean what he says when he says these things or is he just trying to make people laugh? Can’t be sure. Certainly seems that Hernandez is a guy who’s down for some off color humor who would to chalk it all up to “locker room talk.” Maybe I just don’t want to think that Keith is a big time jerk because of how much I adore the Seinfeld episodes when they’re on. He apologized and this will get minor play for a half second and then this will be forgotten. Hopefully he chooses his words better going forward.
What I don’t understand is the joke itself. Papi goes into lick Hernandez as if he’s mimicking Yasiel Puig’s bat licking thing, which is weird on all counts. Hernandez who was born in San Francisco and grew up there immediate reaction is to say that he’s not from San Francisco. And then to follow it up with saying ‘Bro” just makes the whole exchange bizarre. I just can’t get behind old guys saying bro or fist bumping. Never can never will.
Here’s some obligatory scenes of Keith Hernandez from Seinfeld
PS- Any coincidence that a guy named George won the World Series MVP? None at all. Okay, I’ll shut up
