CLEVELAND — Cleveland Cavaliers guard JR Smith earned his one-game suspension from the team Thursday by throwing a bowl of soup at assistant coach Damon Jones, multiple sources with knowledge of the incident told ESPN. Jones, a former Cavs player, has been back with Cleveland since 2014 and worked his way up from an assistant coach with the Canton Charge, the Cavs’ G League affiliate, to the Cavs where he is a trusted voice for head coach Tyronn Lue. Smith will return to practice Friday, according to Lue, and resume his starting shooting guard spot Saturday when the Cavs host the Denver Nuggets. Cleveland lost 108-97 to the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday when Smith served his suspension.Rodney Hood, starting in place of Smith, scored 11 points on 5-for-14 shooting with five rebounds and five assists.
Maybe this was some big misunderstanding. Maybe JR though he and his coach were playing a game called catch the soup but only JR knew the game was on. He throws the soup at his coach thinking he was going to catch it, because that’s pretty much the only rule of the game, but instead his coach didn’t know he was playing the game catch the soup and he was inadvertently hit with a bowl of soup. The coach overreacts not knowing he was ever in a game of catch the soup and decrees that JR must of thrown the soup at him on purpose, not playing a game and has coach J̶a̶m̶e̶s̶ Lue have him reprimanded for such an act by suspending him a game. Pretty standard, logical reason for such an occurrence. Makes total sense to me. However, if you want to possibly not buy that explanation you could hypothetically come to a conclusion that JR was in one of his moods where he just goes off the rails because he’s filled with rage/anger and can’t control it. I suppose if you want to cover all avenues of this story I guess you can possibly reach that conclusion. But I’m not going to do that. I’m going to stick with the first theory and that is that JR thought he was playing an arousing game of catch the soup. Yeah, I like that theory a heck of a lot better than the second theory.
